TWENTY-ONE

At the last count, which was still unconfirmed and probably optimistic, half a billion people worldwide had either lost their homes or had to abandon them due to flooding, or wind damage.

One of the super storms, a collection of four category five hurricanes had come together in the Caribbean. It had devastated most of the island chains including: the Dominican Republic; the Bahamas; Cuba; Jamaica; Barbados; and Antigua. All these islands had been left more or less uninhabitable. The only survivors had headed inland into mountainous regions, but only a few had survived.

The super storm then crossed the Gulf of Mexico, where it made landfall near to the Houston coastline that had already been dramatically changed by the rising water levels. Usually storms would start to dissipate at this point, but being so strong it continued cutting its one hundred kilometre wide path of destruction across Texas. It completely flattened Dallas, before marching on across the boarder into Oklahoma where Oklahoma City faired no better than Dallas. Next, it ravaged Kansas, before moving onto the northern most tip of Missouri and the south of Iowa. Losing some momentum, it was finally downgraded to a mere single category five, still with a huge destructive power, but with the catastrophic results left in its wake, any downgrade was welcome.

Already suffering the effects of previous storms and coastal flooding, over half of America had now been declared a disaster zone and the National Guard had been deployed across the country to keep order.

This was one of several super storms that had occurred during the last few weeks around the globe and the experts were coming up with half-truths to protect themselves from the ongoing barrage of questions from the general public. One scientist from America had gone on record saying that ‘the adverse weather was due to the Earth passing through the central plain of the galaxy creating greater gravitational forces, effectively stretching the Earth and in turn the moon, which was creating these extremely high tides and storms.

The Earth was actually doing just that at the time, but any slight variation in gravitational force from this crossing of the galaxy’s plain was negated by the pull that such a large mass as Nemesis was having on our sun, which in turn, affected everything else within the inner solar system. Needless to say, this scientist was one of the people on the ‘Ark’ list, and wasn’t going to jeopardise his position by digging any deeper than he had to.

It was the same story around the world, with most high-level scientists spending most of their time deflecting questions and ideas from curious upcoming scientists who had the potential to ruin their chances for a ticket out of there.

The only person who was having a problem with all this was Lucas, and not because of any morality he felt he should have (morals had deserted him long before), but because if his arithmetic was correct – and he knew it was – they now had triple the amount of people on the list than there was places.
